Dick Walterhouse

Chief Risk Officer


Mr. Walterhouse graduated from the University of Michigan in 1976 with a bachelor of science in civil engineering in structuring engineering. After a 4-year professional baseball career with the Pittsburgh Pirates, he started his construction career in 1979.

Mr. Walterhouse has been involved in the supervision of more than $3 billion dollars of completed construction projects during his 36 years of service with Pankow. He started at Pankow as a field engineer and worked his way up through the project superintendent and project executive ranks. Mr. Walterhouse then became president of Pankow Special Projects, L.P., a separate licensed general contractor specializing in smaller project work. He was largely responsible for growing the company’s small project capabilities to over $100 million per year. His dedication and passion for safety led to the evolution of Pankow’s safety culture, and he became one of the country’s leaders in construction risk management as the chief risk officer.

From 2012 to 2015, Mr. Walterhouse was responsible for both operations and risk management, leading Pankow toward operational excellence through a commitment to continuous improvement as the chief operating officer. Today, he continues to mentor and oversee risk management as chief risk officer with a primary focus on enterprise risk management including legal, contracts, insurance, and the expansion of Pankow’s contractor controlled insurance program.

In 2018, Mr. Walterhouse was the first recipient of the Bill McIntyre Leadership Award, which recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to the construction industry through innovative risk management strategies and tactics.
