IRMI Issues Fourth Edition of The Wrap-Up Guide Book

Dallas, TX, July 6, 2006—International Risk Management Institute, Inc. (IRMI), is pleased to announce availability of the fourth edition of its book The Wrap-Up Guide, which provides a basic blueprint for wrap-up success.

The Wrap-Up Guide, Fourth Edition, is the most comprehensive information source available on owner and contractor controlled insurance programs (OCIPs and CCIPs) for large construction projects. OCIPs and CCIPs involve the group purchase of various casualty lines of insurance on behalf of all the contractors and the owner instead of having each participant buy its own insurance as is traditionally done. The Wrap-Up Guide, Fourth Edition, discusses the essentials of a feasibility study, the contractor bidding process, project safety, important insurance coverage considerations, critical construction contract provisions, CIP documentation and administration, and much more. The appendix includes sample CIP manuals, a safety program outline, CIP administrator RFP, and contract wording.

The first three editions of The Wrap-Up Guide were written by Gary E. Bird, CPCU, ARM, then risk manager of Phelps-Dodge Corporation. When Gary lost his life in 2001, IRMI faced the need to develop a different approach to updating and revising the book. "The often controversial nature of wrap-ups and a desire to provide a balanced treatment of the perspectives of both wrap-up sponsors and contractor participants made us think twice about asking a single person to undertake the update as sole author," said Jack P. Gibson, CPCU, CRIS, ARM, contributing author and editor of the book. "It would be difficult to find an individual with substantial knowledge of and experience with wrap-ups who could also put his or her biases—pro or con—aside and keep the perspective in balance," Gibson continued. "For this reason, we decided to keep the writing in-house and use industry professionals as advisers and reviewers."

Ultimately, 14 construction risk and insurance professionals contributed generously to this revision. Thus, the fourth edition is essentially an amalgamation of the ideas, knowledge, and experiences of Gary Bird, these new contributors, and the IRMI editor, Gibson. As a tribute to Gary Bird, IRMI will donate in his name a portion of the proceeds from sales of this book to the Spencer Educational Foundation, which supports risk management education at colleges and universities.

Additionally, The Wrap-Up Guide, Fourth Edition, is being used as the text for an online continuing education course within the Construction Risk and Insurance Specialist (CRIS^TM) educational program. Those who complete this CRIS course can receive insurance CE credit as well as CRIS reaccreditation credit.
