Joseph M. Inwald

Charterd Property and Casualty Underwriter

Mr. Inwald has more than 40 years of consulting, executive, insurance brokerage, corporate legal, and expert service experience serving healthcare providers, other commercial purchasers of property-casualty insurance, and various types of insurers and insurance intermediaries. Strategic, tactical, and product development focused management consulting engagements have been successfully completed for dozens of insurers, commercial insurance purchasers, and entrepreneurs—most related to professional liability risk transfer.

Most notable is his track record of assisting these entities to develop and implement products and programs that create a competitive advantage. Many have involved the use or consideration of captive mechanisms, inclusive of risk retention groups. Experience as a practicing corporate healthcare attorney, vice president of insurance and risk management at a 12-hospital system, vice president of product development reporting to the CEO at a New York Stock Exchange listed property-casualty insurer, vice president of insurance product development at a catastrophic care manager, and officer at a national insurance broker has created a solid foundation for consulting and board service. The current practice includes assisting various organizations, including nonprofits, governmental units, real estate investment trusts, and family offices to select, monitor, and improve insurance programs and associated professional advisers (i.e., conducting formal requests for proposals) and providing less structured performance assessments.

At the Wharton School, he received dual degrees in healthcare administration and organizational design. Mr. Inwald received his juris doctor degree from the University of Michigan Law School and earned his Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) designation while working at Johnson & Higgins. Mr. Inwald taught business law at the University of Detroit Mercy, lectures at Wayne State's law and business schools, and serves as faculty at various professional seminars and conferences. He routinely speaks to healthcare providers, start-ups, insurers, and other financial organizations, and trade associations on various topics related to insurance coverage, risk transfer, and joint ventures.
